\\\\\\ \\ \\ \\\ interview with a label dude, dean bein (founder of true panther sounds)

Photo - The back of Dean Bein, half of Will Roan of Amazing Baby's head, Quinn Walker of Suckers. Rock and roll friendship legion.

Dean Bein is the founder of True Panther Sounds who have been putting it down pretty big this year. Now a part of the Matador family, True Panther is responsible for putting out "Album" from the SF band Girls who have made quite a name for themselves this year ON SOME YOU MUST BE LIVING UNDER A ROCK IF YOU AINT HEARD OF THEM type shit. TPS is also responsible for putting out music from Glasser, Tanlines, Lemonade, Hunx and his Punx, Tamaryn, and The Fly Girlz who were formed at a 21st century sponsored after school program at Brownsville Middle School PS 284. As busy as dude is, he was kind enough to answer some questions the inquiring minds at Gordon Gartrelle must know:

- Yo Dean Bein, when people ask what you're doing do you ever say just bein dean?

Yes also, if you do a good search for Dean Bein a lot of times it'll be like "Dean bin CRAZY" or "Dean Bein STUPID". When my mom first figured out how to use google she came to believe I was a really controversial figure on the internet.

- Do you download music? Do you draw a somewhat moralistic line, as many people do, between widely available popular music that is okay to download and self-supporting indie music that you'd like to support the band for? Do you download movies?

I don't download movies and I don't download indie or major label music. Majors because I am scared of a time warner representative rope swinging through my bedroom window and taking me out with a laser sword or something. Indies because I want to represent and support bands I love and , companies I love and believe in.

- Is the world going to end in 2012? if so, how?

My dad who is a "really far out guy" said that 2012 will be a massive change in the human consciousness. In his russian accent he said "many people may die, many people may not, but in the end we will all think of the world differently. There is no such thing as apocalypse." My dad bought me a book about Nostradamus when I was 11 and as a result I grew up as a half-hearted no-future-esque punk rocker. I now believe ha things will never be "all right" for long but also that nothing will ever be "totally fucked" forever. There is no such thing as apocalypse, only massive change.

- How dope is Monta Ellis? That guy is great. Is he going to fully recover and be the franchise player the Warriors need? How angry were you about that whole moped thing? I was pissed. I'm a Knicks fan but since they suck I slut around a little and Monta was hell of enjoyable to watch. Plus I was living with a dude from the Bay at the time.

Imagine my life with favorite teams being the knicks and warriors. Maybe this is a "no future " vibe extending itself into my adult life. I was pissed about Monta but also he is like 12 years-old. Have you ever heard him talk? He has the most amazing southern accent. Also, growing up a warriors fan I am always convinced that the Warriors will trade away any possible franchise player for a 4th round pick and a bag of sunchips so I have no such delusions about Monta being with us for long.

- What do you think of japanther?

Do you realize they have been around for almost 10 years? Do you think they realize this?

What do you think of the black panthers?

I think it's cool that Bobby Seale is really into bbq'ing now. He has a bunch of cookbooks and maybe even a restaurant. I am generally dubious of "revolutionary political practice" but I am super down with revolutionary/life-altering bbq ribs. Cooking pigs not killing pigs…or something.

What do you think of the comic book super hero black panther?

I tried to do this entire interview "off line" but I was stumped by this question and just googled him. He is like a low-grade batman? I don't know! I am not impressed!!

What do you think of pantera?

In high school I had a friend who played on the football team who was into Pantera. I made him a mix tape one time that had 10 yard fight and Earth Crisis on it and it didn't really move him .He said Pantera was way harder than those bands. I didn't understand really but I know that I was mysteriously inconsolably sad when Dimebag Darrell was killed.

What do you think of the panther as an animal?

The panther is beautiful and fast and deadly

How did you come up with the name True Panther Sounds?

We got it from a medieval bestiary. In it, the panther eats a meal then retires to the cave for a few days to digest. When it comes out, the odor that comes from its mouth brings all of the animals of the forest together in harmony and peace. The only animal that is not down with this is the dragon, the dragon hates the smell and it makes it sick. The dragon is the enemy of the panther. The True Panther brings all of the different animals of the forest together in harmony, that is why we picked that name.

- Do you feel that the quality of spam mail has gone down significantly in the past years? I used to get stuff that was pure absurdist poetry like "The eternal poodle mix tries the vacuum cleaner wisdom teeth with McConaughey in spades" but now it's 100% investment loans and prescription drugs. Do you blame gmail's spam filter for such degradation?

I got a really beautiful spam recently.

"excess of sorrow laughs. excess of joy weeps. a bare, bleak shed in blackest silhouette, searchest the grass with tongue of flame,"

I also got a poem in my email a week ago and thought it was a weird free-verse spam thing but then re-read and it turns out it was a real poem from a secret admirer!! I've never had a secret admirer. It made me hate spam even more bitterly than before, for almost making me miss such a thing.

- When you hear a band you're going to sign, is it usually something that's apparent the first time you see them play or listen to their record or is it something that comes out of a lot of listens?

It's usually immediate but then also I get excited about most music almost every day so I have to give things a bit of time to marinate to see if my excitement fades. I am an excitable person.

- Do you think people with pilates balls in their house will ever be free of someone coming over and using the thing as a toy or a hop ball? do you think people who do pilates religiously ever secretly bounce that thing around the house for fun?

I don't associate with those kinds of people. It's also a shame that people who try to use their balls for self-empowerment are ridiculed and their balls are mocked and misused.

- Any good stories from the joint. I think I ran into you after you were locked up for a tnight. JAIL.

The only poster they had up in ny central booking office was Mike Dunwoody from the San Jose Sharks. That one really threw me for a loop. Everyone called me "that little white nigga". I met a guy who was arrested, released with no money, jumped to turnstile to get home only to get re-arrested. I also met two graffiti guys who were nice to me because they knew this other graffiti guy who I met in elementary school- which is crazy because that was in California.

- Does Christopher Owens listen to any rap music?

Jesus Christ was the first gangster rapper. I think Christopher listens to a lot of religious music.

- What's next for True Panther?

I want True Panther to keep on growing and keep on doing right by the artists, and keep on putting out good music for people from all around the world. The label is nothing if it can't provide something to artists that they can't do themselves so I hope to continue to be at their mercy and to keep surprising listeners with new, adventurous, honest and fearless sounds.

Good lookin out Dean for taking the time to do this shit. When I get around to it expect some more interviews coming soon w Nick Diamonds of Islands and the band Bear in Heaven.

Visitation Rights for CF Edley: nah, no, not really... what? holy fuck.

My 'Jewish' circumcised friend Eli "Elijah Mo" Spindel, the conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Brooklyn [SOB] [real], just sent me this and I was.... moved? I don't know, my brain is pickley.

Just so you don't have to follow any confusing links, here's the description presented live and uncensored:
In May of 1993, Minister Louis Farrakhan staged a recital of the Violin Concerto, Op.64, by the Jewish composer Felix Mendelssohn in what was one of the most politically-resonant artistic displays in classical music history. In a performance manifesting the most dramatic confluence of art and politics since Richard Wagner penned his notorious tract, 'Das Judenthum in der Music' ('Judaism in Music') ~ and at once refuting that screed's main premise and theme ~ Farrakhan instantly established himself as the single most transformative classical musician in American artistic history.

Squarely placing himself at the epicentre of the most controversial event in the classical music world since the tumult sparked by the 'Tristan und Isolde' overture at the Israel Festival in Jerusalem, Farrakhan's rendition of the Mendelssohn violin concerto left the audience aghast. For the eighteen months leading up to his performance, Farrakhan was coached by Elaine Skorodin Fohrman, a Jewish violin virtuoso and member of Chicago's Roosevelt University where she taught classical violin. Farrakhan's choice of the Mendelssohn piece was attributed by some observers to the composer's identity as a Jew ~ a gesture widely viewed as an "olive branch" to the Nation of Islam leader's Jewish detractors.

Farrakhan's first rendition of the violin concerto occurred as part of a three-day symposium, 'Gateways: Classical Music and the Black Musician' , at the Reynold's Auditorium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on 18 April 1993. The program included a rendition of the Glazunov Violin Concerto with former New York Philharmonic member, Sanford Allen, as soloist and the Saint Sean's Concerto for Violoncello featuring University of Michigan professor, Anthony Elliott. Farrakhan prefaced his recital by declaring that he would "try to do with music what cannot be done with words and try to undo with music what words have done."

Shortly thereafter, Farrakhan reprised his euphonious peace gesture before a Chicago audience of three thousand on May 17 on his eighteenth-century Guadagnini violin...

Aghast? I'm no Language Arts major but I am a college dropout WITH a highschool education and 'aghast' seems like it might be the wrong word. Then again, maybe not. Ask me after I dream this off.

\\\best. band. ever. : Neon Indian

Everyone likes their mysterious bands these days. Neon Indian is a mysterious band. Neon Indian is also what people called me when I listened to hell of electro music and dressed slightly dumber than I do now. Everyone doesn't like them yet. Maybe everyone should. I like them. I can only speak for myself. Neon Indian is a boy from Austin and a girl from Brooklyn. Their real identities have yet to be revealed though word on the block is they've been around making music and if we find out who they is we'd know. They make music by correspondings with one another. I bet if one of them runs a gmail search for emails from the other, shit is bananas. Like 800 e-mails and conversations.

One day I will learn about bandwidth and post mp3s and stuff. I'll even get a computer and blog from home. Until then there's GorillaVsBear:

\\\music: (the) tony castles

holy shit.

okay. Paul Sicilian and Gabriel Wurzel (Muggabears) are two of my homie Dylan Rau's (Bear Hands) old buds from CT. They're very talented. Paul's always played the most amazing songs on acoustic with this beautiful (no homezies!) voice in the most genuine, oh this little talent?, type of way and i love them. i've waited 2 years now? for dude to put a band together. Along with Willie Miesmer (Boogie Boarders) the three recently formed (The) Tony Castles. It's beautiful rock music. It's spastic. It's lo-fi. It's heart melting. something about hope and despair. Paul's voice is beautiful. Paul is beautiful. Gaby is beautiful. I don't know Willie but that dood's prolly beautiful too.

\\\Music: African Connection Mix from Italians Do It Better's Mike Simonetti

"Since I have some downtime this month and Ifinally got the studio together (after a year)i decided to do a mix. This one is called AfricanConnection and it is mostly African disco lps and 45's mixed with some Caribbean and Jamaican tunes in there for good measure. no real mixinghere, just kicking back and fading in and out for maximum early Spring vibes, so dont expecta dj spectacular here- its all about the selection. As a matter of fact, this mix wasdone while playing with the big man on the floor-- true multitasking. Anyone who can guess these tracks will get any three Italians releases of their choice. This one's gonna be a little tougher than the Albuterol mix!"

Music: PO PO - Kill Tonight

ok ok ok. I have to go into overdrive at work so this'll be quick.

I don't even want to post on these guys because they're cooler brown guys than Ashok and I but this song is so good.

One time I went to see Boy Crisis play at Lit like 2 years ago and as we were going in this band was unloading their gear:

I would have liked to see whatever the fuck these guys do. 2 years later they're signed to Diplo's MadDecent and recently put out the single KILL TONIGHT.

I can't find a downloadable version of it anywhere but go to their myspace right now and listen to Kill Tonight 9 times like I did at 3:30 am last night. I'm tired...

Music Roundup: What I'm Lissning To And Stealing From Other Blogs

First and foremost, Nah Right dropped another new DOOM track from the BORN INTO THIS promo. Here's DOOM dropping knowledge over J-Dilla's Lightworks (Sharebee).

And via, CannibalCheerleader, here's CELLZ (mp3). I just came across Cannibal Cheerleader and they have a great track-by-track review of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs upcoming album which I'm also excited for. I dropped one of the tracks here earlier and there are a couple of others floating around. I've enjoyed everything I've heard so far.

I'm a much bigger fan of Beirut than I often remember. Dude lived in the same building as me by the Morgan stop before I lived there and came back with a full band to film a couple of the songs for his take-away show of each track on The Flying Club Cup. I woke up on a Sunday at 11 AM, maybe hungover, and thought someone was playing the album until I saw the entire band filming Nantes in my stairwell. That was cool. A while ago there was a track called Venice going around that was much more electronic than anything I'd ever heard from Zach Condon, and I liked it. While I haven't heard any of the new album inspired by his time in Oaxaca, Mexico, I've listened to the entire Realpeople EP, which includes Venice and 4 other electronic songs, and am a big fan right now. Via All-Things-Go, here is the stellar My Night With The Prostitute From Marseille. Good song. Very good song.

NEXT - Cam is one of the only fools who can come close to touching DOOMs vocabulary game --> Golly I'm Gully, Look at his Galoshes Vs. 23 skidoo. (Ghost comes close too). Again via NahRight, practically the only hip-hop blog that matters, and thanks to Miss Info, who I didn't care much for until I started following her on Twitter, Cam'ron's new joint: I Used To Get It In Ohio (sharebee).

THANK YOU, ANIMATION!

Music: Jackie Chain Freestyle

Jackie Chain fun facts: Jackie Chain is listed on Facebook as my favorite music. There are 5 other people that appear on the facebook list with Jackie Chain in their favorite music. Only 2 of these 5 actually have "Jackie Chain" listed, the others are like Jackie-O or this or that. One of these 2 people is my friend James from college, and the other is my friend James from high school. Crazy... I love the way he says "food" in this freestyle...

Jackie Chain is so hood. I guess he signed with Universal, so look out for a lot more Jackie Chain heading your way. Also, I can't understand the way people in the hood in Bama talk:

Music: Gordon Voidwell

Not to be confused with Gordon Gartrelle, Gordon Voidwell (fka Will Johnson) is a musician probably influenced in some way by the same Cosby Show this blog got it's name from. I don't know that for sure, but I assume so. Yo is that racist? It was such a good show. I mean, that can't be racist.

Gordon Voidwell makes music for cats that used to listen to a lot of underground rap but then got bored with that scene when it started getting... boring. He also makes music for people who aren't rooted in hip-hop, but who want to get down. On certain tracks, he pulls off the difficult task of making political commentary while not jamming it down your throat - using sexy dance beats to undermine that political commentary, but leaving both so you can pick and choose later when his joint's stuck in your head.

When I was a young teenager, music consisted solely of Hot 97, anyone on Def Jux, MF Doom, Juggaknots, J-Live, and that type of thing - never Anticon though. I'd go to Fat Beats every now and then. Percee P would sit outside selling CDs. I idolized mid-90s rap: Boot Camp Clique, Nas, Wu-Tang, etc. But then New York changed...

This is music for people that wanted to dance but couldn't because it was 2000 and New York was still holding on to the glorified age of black hoodies and black timbs that was no longer present. They clinged on to the nostalgia of Nas's Queens and Biggie's Bed Stuy but both of these hoods were changing. The New York of 2000 and onward was not New York of the 1990s. White people moved into town! The police followed them. Jay-Z started rapping about Hermes instead of Nautica. Kids that historically didn't listen to rap or even only listened to underground, started loving Dip Set and not entirely ironically. They liked it because it was FUN. Crunk was happening around the country and the Dips were the closest NY would come to it. While Rap was getting funner and people were leaning and rocking, it wasn't getting any smarter though. It was a very guilty pleasure.

Those are the rap kids that wanted to have fun. This is also music for non-rap people that want to have a good time. Maybe they hate rap/hip-hop songs that include the words "up in the club" because they don't go "clubbing" but still want music that they can dance to - just not in the fictional "club" blacks talk about because maybe that scares them. Maybe their brother got beat up at a "club." They'd prefer their urban dance music to pop off at a "bar" or maybe in the privacy of a Brooklyn apartment one moved to from the Midwest in hopes of following some kind of dream. They try, but they just can't get past the word "club." Beats me!

And so that's what I think. Remember when fools rocked Dapper Dan and danced at rap shows like in the Sugarhill Gang video? Remember when rap was influenced by Disco? Remember that before the NWA was catching on, a dude in California named Egyptian Lover RAN SHIT and did it with 808s and electronic music. Some fools were too hardbody for that and wanted to talk about how life wasn't a party, about how shit was tough in Compton. Some fools wanted to dance their way out of that specific thing - how tough shit was in Compton. Comparisons to Prince are sure to follow, much like they will for Boy Crisis who, while very different and situated in an entirely different scene, are of a similar vein in being rooted in soul and r&b but not purely in a revivalist fashion - aka moving. shit. forward. While on the one hand reclaiming electro-r&b for people of color from bands like Hot Chip, and maybe Boy Crisis though maybe not a la "ethnic band member," Voidwell's equally inspired by that school of music and it shows in his material. If fans of either came to a show for one of them and happened to catch the other, they'd be happy with both. I know I would.

Gordon Voidwell :

Bread (Via ZShare)
White Friends (Via ZShare)

* Also, look out for the DR/GV collaboration joint when that gets done. Yes.
* Also, you may remember Gordon Voidwell/Will Johnson from G Band Free, a "very, very fine band." (Whattup Sam, Whattup Chip, Whattup Jon).

New Music: Boy Crisis

Faithful three readers, I apologize for the lack of posting here. I took the long weekend to go Weed Edge and I don't regret it. Not one bit. For after all, blog, we weedheads and greedheads, with self-anointed street cred, emaciated fools look at us and note that we fed, we weed edge...

On to big tings...

Boy Crisis is a Brooklyn Buzz Band. Ever heard of them? They make music that is "danceable" and has "pop hooks." They have an "ethnic band member." They are well-liked by me. Boy Crisis is recording their upcoming album and it will be very good. I've had the pleasure of hearing a lot of the new stuff and even the demos sound great. If the Crookers version of Day and Night can get played on Hot 97 and urban radio stations across the hood, I don't doubt that Boy Crisis can do it. They have an "ethnic band member." While I can't leak the demos I was lucky enough to steal from Victor's computer when he wasn't looking, I can post a video Boob Weisz made for a remix of a demo of a new song of theirs called Fountain of Youth...
